Blog description.

Accentuating the Liberal in Classical Liberal: Advocating Ascendency of the Individual & a Politick & Literature to Fight the Rise & Rise of the Tax Surveillance State. 'Illigitum non carborundum'.

Liberty and freedom are two proud words that have been executed from the political lexicon: they were frog marched and stood before a wall of blank minds, then forcibly blindfolded, and shot, with the whimpering staccato of ‘equality’ and ‘fairness’ resounding over and over. And not only did this atrocity go unreported by journalists in the mainstream media, they were in the firing squad.

The premise of this blog is simple: the Soviets thought they had equality, and welfare from cradle to grave, until the illusory free lunch of redistribution took its inevitable course, and cost them everything they had. First to go was their privacy, after that their freedom, then on being ground down to an equality of poverty only, for many of them their lives as they tried to escape a life behind the Iron Curtain. In the state-enforced common good, was found only slavery to the prison of each other's mind; instead of the caring state, they had imposed the surveillance state to keep them in line. So why are we accumulating a national debt to build the slave state again in the West? Where is the contrarian, uncomfortable literature to put the state experiment finally to rest?

Israel in Gaza II: The Uncomfortable Truths On Both Sides.

This loosely continues my previous post, in which my position was though I hate Israel’s current brutal campaign in Gaza, I understand it, and I would not take part in the protest marches held on Saturday.

Look at how complex this current Gaza campaign is, wrapped in polemic and self-fulfilling deception.

As ever, sorry to all bloggers below for appearing in my blog, but I believe in credit where credit is due. So it’s academic rigour, I’m not suggesting you agree with me on anything.

To the Discomfiture of the Pro-Israeli Camp.

There are some valid doubts cast on the Israeli viewpoint, or rather, justification, of this Gaza campaign in this  Nation article (hat-tip Giovanni Tiso) debunking five assumptions being wheeled out by the Pro-Israeli camp. It’s well worth a read, and though I could debunk some elements of the debunking, some of the points certainly stand, such as was the current campaign instigated by Hamas rockets: probably not.

The current campaign was in fact most likely based in Israel’s demand for revenge over the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens several months ago, the blame for which was put on Hamas. Only, uncomfortably, it is now proven the teenagers were not taken in any sort of Hamas plot. (hat-tip Carrie Stoddart-Smith)

Add to this that the anger of those existing in Gaza is justified on the level that their living conditions are appalling. I don’t agree with the view that Israeli policy for Gaza is essentially apartheid, rather, I prefer the view I have seen tweeted by Morgan Godfrey, it is more akin to the reservation system which has destroyed the lives of Native Americans. You can easily enough Google Gaza living conditions to prove this for yourselves, some of which are summarised well enough by Laurie Penny in this piece.

Unfortunately, however, it’s more complicated than this.

To the Dsicomfiture of the Pro-Palestinian Camp.

Blogger Whaleoil has an interesting Youtube clip up this morning. Not going back at all on my previous post where I stated my welcoming of multiculturalism, and open immigration, including – to the commenter in that post who states I don’t understand anything – for moderate Muslims, it is yet true that unfortunately it’s the radicals that set the agenda and the action. Not just in Islam. Obviously the majority of Germans in the 1930’s were good people, but it was the radical Nazis who set the agenda which ended up in sixty million murders. The majority of the Russian people were good people, but it was the Communists who set the agenda of bloodbath, purge, and the destruction completely of an individual’s freedom. Just as the majority of Muslims in America are good people, however, it only took seventeen radicals on 9/11 to change the course of that country forever.

So, the moderate majority is essentially irrelevant. To that, in relation to Gaza, I say yes and no, because the moderate majority of Palestinians are problematic in that via democratic elections in 2006, the majority voted in a radical Hamas government, giving them 76 out of 132 seats. Yes, that still leaves an awful lot of Palestinians who didn’t vote for them, but the message sent to the radical Zionists, was that moderate Islam in Palestine was something worse than irrelevant for it had voted for Hamas violence justified by a barbaric mysticism, not peaceful, reasoned  negotiation to better the lot of their intolerable lives.

Even in this current escalation - and while writing this those bastard Hamas have just chosen to start firing rockets into Tel Aviv again to end the twelve hour truce, despite Israel offering a 24 hour extension and still holding their fire - I can find link after link to stories slating the Israelis, but can someone provide a link to a single article written by a moderate Muslim living in Gaza that is also asking their own Hamas to stop firing rockets so their children won’t be massacred as they are now, and a peaceful interim solution found? A single link please?

I suspect you’ll have as much luck as I would finding a link to a piece written by a Zionist in Israel asking their government to stop the illegal settlements, and to use resources to improve the lot of the people living in Gaza. Because the radicals set the agenda on both sides of this debate.

And so to summarise, in a world where reason ruled, and individual human lives were respected, Israel would use some of its US$3 billion aide from US to build infrastructure in Gaza to create cooperation, friendship and peace, rather than hatred and war. In that same perfect world, Hamas would use the money it has to buy weaponry, to build that infrastructure also. The Israelis and Palestinians are as far from that perfect world, as we are in the West from the free society, for as I mentioned in passing in my last post there is a solution, that being societies formed around constitutional republics in the form of minarchies, based on a humanist ethic (not barbaric mystical nonsense), and where the primary role of a meagre sized state is to protect its smallest minority: an individual. To protect that individual’s right to do and say whatever the hell they want, so long as they harm no other. To protect that individual particularly from the machinations and bureaucratic collectivism of out-of-control (welfare) tax surveillance states. Problem is the chances of such civilised free and prosperous capitalist societies being formed when God, Allah, or Marx and any variation of politics based on identity is involved, is absolute zero. Never, as in ever.

That’s also why you will never see me on such a protest march.

Gaza and Israel: It’s As Complicated As It Is Brutal And Simple, With No Answers.

I deliberately left my last post ‘on top’ for a long time because it sums up almost all the themes of this blog relating to the Orwellian nature of our tax surveillance states, and the fallacies of both the common good and the social contract held by statists of both Left and Tory hues: that post is a précis of classical liberalism so I hope you might want to read.

That said, Gaza. On Twitter this morning someone assumed I might want to join this weekend’s protest march against the Israeli campaign in Gaza. This was my response.

To expand: the current Israeli operation in Gaza is brutal - as war always is - and sickening: being the next thing to a pacifist myself, I hate what is happening. On the other hand, every Islamic neighbour of Israel is on record as wanting to, quote, ‘obliterate’ Israel, and there are again anti-Semitic marches in Europe where the neo-Nazi far right are strengthening out of the ruined lives of dependence from Keynesian, big brother state economic chaos, meaning Israel has done the simple, ruthless arithmetic and realised if it loses even the once, there will be a holocaust of WWII scale, not the scale of Gaza. Every Hamas rocket truly threatens the survival of an entire nation of people.  And the important fact here being lost in the fog of emotion in the West, is that Hamas chooses to keep firing its missiles, and chooses to fire them from hospitals and schools, and unlike the Israelis does not ring through fifteen minute warnings, nor set up field hospitals – I’ve seen the pictures – to treat the wounded of both sides.

Because Israel cannot afford to lose even once, the mathematics further mean meeting force with overwhelming force. If the position is taken as many on today’s protest march do, that the height of supposed Israeli evil is measured by the difference in body count, well during WWII something over ten times the number of German civilians were killed by the British bombing raids, than the reverse, so does your algebra end you up on the British high command of that time being evil also? Albeit, especially in one of the Israeli sniper incidents I've seen on video, there should certainly be war crimes investigations of some things that are happening in Gaza.

Are there solutions? No. It’s religion, stupid, we’re not dealing here with an enlightened, reasoned humanism. In the fundamentalist Islamic vacancies between the ears of Hamas, Israel is dealing with people who have renounced their humanity by renouncing their responsibility to think, indeed, whom decapitate, regularly, those who do.

How do you plan to encapsulate all that in a protest march?

As for my tweet reference, that was to the inimitable Milas Kundera’s novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being:

When she told her French friends about [why she would not attend a street protest against the communists], they were amazed. "You mean you don't want to fight the occupation of your country?" She would have liked to tell them that behind Communism, Fascism, behind all occupations and invasions lurks a more basic, pervasive evil and that the image of that evil was a parade of people marching by with raised fists and shouting identical syllables in unison. But she knew she would never be able to make them understand.

I reckon those fundamentalist blokes in Hamas – sorry to my women readers, but no equality to be found here – would enjoy a good fist clenching march. To paraphrase this quotation, I would further say that I lied above, there is a solution, being individualism, but the West is moving further away from me being able to make you understand that either. Which is why I say please count me out of your marches and your boycotts of all you don’t like, it’s complicated, and I’ve grown up.

(Oh, and just before the conservatives who read this get all excited, no, my position on welcoming multi-culturalism and – mutter, spit, cringe – moderate Islam, hasn’t changed, and I hold to first principles and an open immigration policy. That position is explained on this post. We won’t break down the unenlightened nature of that faith below the fundamentalist level by isolating it. Wars are best won peacefully, where possible, a mind at a time, and I love difference.)

Israel, Palestine and Fascism in Europe …McCully Not an ‘Arse’ on this one.

One of the blogs I follow is Carrie Stoddart’s Ellipsister on Whatever. I always find Carrie’s posts interesting, but we don’t agree on much, and certainly not her latest regarding the current conflagration between Israel and Palestine. I simply post below my comment to Carrie’s thread.

Every Israeli rocket has attempted as best they are able to target Hamas terrorists; every Hamas rocket has deliberately targeted Israeli civilians, and has deliberately been fired behind the shield of their own civilians so they can use a body count of their own in their politick. The below cartoon is accurate, and that's beyond cynical.

Israel is surrounded by nations that want to wipe it from the map: Israelis are entitled to defend themselves.

There's a concept known as methodological individualism: every act is ultimately carried out by individuals. Those who want peace are rational people, because peace is a-priori for civilised living: but on that count, how does a reasoned ethic negotiate with a parent who will honour-murder their daughter with acid because she looked at a boy? How does a nation reason with a hatred so strong as Hamas has, that they would use the tactics explained at the start of this comment?

When someone can reconcile those points for me, I'll start listening. Because, yes, Palestine deserves a nation-state, their people deserve peace: we all do. But those they elect must start thinking, rather than emoting with their rockets, because they won't have peace, until Israelis are given peace, and history has taught Israelis that in the margin for error there are sadly only the graves of Jews. And with a far right politician in Hungary standing up in the Hungarian parliament only this week, demanding a written register of Jews be made in that country, the Israelis are vindicated in the fears they have for their lives, always, because thanks to the new surveillance states born of Keynesian socialism, fascism marches again in the world.

Update One:

Dear Israel, this is not helpful.

Also the discussion between Carrie and I on her thread, the first nine comments, contains information of note for either side of this debate, as well as some points on what constitutes racism. (Link first paragraph above).
