My Piece on Marriage Equality, and the Absurdity of Parliament & Representational Democracy.

Below is simply the comment I have made to Eric Crampton’s post on this topic (he runs a great blog, by the way), which ended with Eric writing ‘Well done New Zealand’:

I'll be the party pooper and disagree Eric.

'Well done NZ' doesn't mean anything in this context. Marriage equality - and letting go the notion the government should be involved in marriage at all: they shouldn’t - should be a basic right beyond the vote. I found all the shenanigans last night absurd.

And okay we've got that now, but how about legalisation of cannabis, and euthanasia ... do we wait another 140 years before we're allowed those?

Last night simply showed we are a kindy of a country, not a country of free grown ups.

All we’re saying is, we’re serfs, and this once our political masters, sorry, representatives, have thrown this little bone to us, and allowed them to feel all good about themselves. And I notice the Campbell Live poll last night came out with over seventy percent against the vote, so it could be argued it's a non-representative law if we go with the tyranny of the majority. Ie, the gay community simply got lucky this once.

It, the system, is offensive to free men. Excuse the dreadful punning, but bugger representative democracy; bring on a constitutional republic in the form of minarchy.

(Probably got out of bed on the wrong side this morning).
