It could benefit from a summary of 'key points' at the end, (or the beginning) so that someone like myself could grasp your take on the issue even if we didn't have the energy to read all the text.Brendan McNeillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02741263914308842497noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7560636882691523439.post-37534569059686305502014-08-27T04:07:16.708+12:002014-08-27T04:07:16.708+12:00Phew.

If you view the Maori seats and the treaty in terms of self determination then I am with you. I fear though that is not what they represent - yes the seats ensure Maori representation, but they do nothing for self determination. Nor do I see provisions in the RMA or the AKL Unitary Plan allowing Maori to adjudicate on land matters as self determination - rather it is setting one race as having more rights than others and my sympathy is with Jamie. So put that aside and go to the point about self determination - why limit that to Maori. Why not enable groups of people to opt out of certain parts of our constitution and set their own code of conduct as long as it doesn't impinge negatively on others. I may have misread you, but it would seem that if the Maori MPs had real power in relation those who voted for them, and anyone could opt to be on the Maori roll, we could somewhat accommodate both you and Jamie. Apartheid is bad, but choice is good. But choice is not possible with the leftist state that cannot abide the idea of anyone escaping to be better off. Davidnoreply@blogger.com
