Anyway - of 7 candidates for 6 seats on the local board she was the only candidate not to win a seat! haha!)

From your own point of view Mark - I gather you are in Sth Canterbury? so write a novel about a farmer getting hammered by tax inspectors and RMA inspectors because he wants to move a shed from one paddock to another, or milk cows at a different time (or a similar minor matter).
Create villains, stupid scenarios, childish rules and a 'hero' to save the day using a bit of common sense...(being in Sth Canterbury you can add in the Hero rooting a few Pommy backpackers, a few car chases across the Canty plains - that sort of thing, in contrast to the tax inspector who has impotence and whose wife and children hate him)...then get 2000 copies sold (or given away) locally and reviews in the local papers - that is how you start winning hearts and minds.

A big dramatic lightening striking "Big Bang" won't happen; needs to happen step by step and starting off small (or local).

Hope this is of some help :)Mr Lineberrynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7560636882691523439.post-6019810013246588452014-12-05T10:43:43.674+13:002014-12-05T10:43:43.674+13:00One point ... more and more I'm starting to wo...One point ... more and more I'm starting to wonder on how this 'schism' affects aesthetics.Mark Hubbardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02541153163041831880noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7560636882691523439.post-86776529058035393522014-12-05T10:32:21.609+13:002014-12-05T10:32:21.609+13:00Great points. They get the books reviewed in progressive periodicals for progressive audiences, who then buy the books. The "best seller lists" are not, but rather only list those "best sellers" that are most politically correct. The rare exceptions do not negate the rule. This creates the illusion that only publishing progressive writers is profitable. And of course profitability isn't first and foremost in mind, since every publishing house is a tax write-off for the corporations which own them. So let's be real about the situation.

I write all the time. And I know a lot of libertarian fiction writers. So I know for a fact there is no lack of product. That represents a paltry readership, and part of my point is our literature that is published doesn't speak to the lives of the majority of Kiwis. Personally, I think it does, to me anyway, but there is still a world-view of difference from a progressive readership, to the rest of us, and as I said that world-view of our writership does seep through to behind the text.

Can you think of individual lit fiction publishers in NZ whose politics you know who are something other than progressive? What proportion is that subset of all publishers, etc, you know?Mark Hubbardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02541153163041831880noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7560636882691523439.post-6634057429150529592014-12-04T17:34:11.115+13:002014-12-04T17:34:11.115+13:00Gosh Mark, you certainly got a lot off your chest!...Gosh Mark, you certainly got a lot off your chest! haha!

Enjoyable to read but there are a couple of things you need to understand when it comes to books, publishers, and classical liberals.

I have been in the Publishing business on and off (had a few long breaks due to illness here and there) for 20 years and it is all about dollars, not personal tastes.

My company has published 2 dozen book titles over the years and the objective is to sell 10,000 copies of each title as a first edition - which we do (one way or another) - in Australia and Britain (both the US and NZ markets are too much hassle); then print additional copies as 2nd and any subsequent editions.

Publishers are businessmen and thinking about whether a particular book is saleable and to whom, not its content - so you are probably wrong about Ayn Rand not getting published in 2014 .....ie: a Publisher, as a businessman, would simply think in terms of "we can probably flog 10,000 copies to Tea party activists so let's do it" in a 2014 context, or "we can probably flog this to John Birchers and Goldwaterites" in a 1957 context.
I seriously doubt her Publisher published Atlas Shrugged for ideological or philosophical reasons (despite what may have been claimed subsequently) - it is a business.

I have said time and time again that if any libertarian or classical liberal wants a book published I am in the business and happy to oblige, only to be greeted with silence.
That may be due to me personally - for whatever childish reason (and I have 2 risible emails from people saying they won't have me publishing their book because they took 'offence' at a piss take blog post I had written) - or that writing a book is too much like hard work, or perhaps something else.

If they are not being written they cannot be publishing and cannot be sold.

It is very similar to my fairly logical surmising that printing a leaflet headed "10 reasons you should vote Libertarianz" (and giving the reasons) and knocking on 1000 doors and giving the householder a copy of said leaflet may result in more votes....than not doing so. No Libz did so, and hence few votes were received.

In other words - it is not that the liberal left is 'conventional wisdom' these days - I strongly suspect that if you knocked on 1000 doors in Timaru or Hamilton or Onehunga and asked their views on the effete/liberal/lefty/smartypants set you would find out how little the reach of such folk actually is - but simply that the classical liberals have surrendered - politically and in the literary world.
The left 'win' by default.

There are no classical liberal books (with the exception of Bob Jones hilarious contributions) because no one bothers to write any; there is no classical liberal political voice because knocking on 1000 doors sounds a bit too much like hard work (and Chris Trotter would write a nasty blog about it and no one wants to be called nasty names).

When a certain group is not on the battlefield it creates the impression their opponents who are - have won a unanimous victory.
Actually turning up is half the battle and as no one is prepared to do so there isn't much that can be done.

Socialist writers - write (because they are otherwise unemployable); classical liberals don't write and so it appears there are none.
Mr Lineberrynoreply@blogger.com
