First, I know this is a side-show:
It is my right to accept the risks and the price of being a free man. But first my politicians must leave me a free man #GCSB
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
@MarkHubbard33 With all due respect, of all of the various ways govt violates your freedom, GCSB barely registers.
— Lliam Munro (@lrmunro) August 20, 2013
@lrmunro Look at my blog. I fully realise that, but I'm flapping about on my own re tax surveillance state. Nice not being sole voice 4 once
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
I will not #crossthefloor - the GCSB bill balances safeguards with securing critical infrastructure. Real threats exist to NZers.
— Paul Foster-Bell MP (@PARFosterBell) August 20, 2013
@PARFosterBell How many hours have u spent studying #GCSB Bill? What real threats exist that require total surveillance? @juhasaarinen
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
@PARFosterBell Have u read the articles from industry experts on cost 2 NZ economy? Have u seen movie Lives of Others? @juhasaarinen
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
@MarkHubbard33 @juhasaarinen Sorry but if you are seriously com paring the NZ GCSB to the East German Stasi, that is just bonkers.
— Paul Foster-Bell MP (@PARFosterBell) August 20, 2013
@PARFosterBell This Bill takes us toward their planned surveilled society, away from free Western society. @juhasaarinen
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
@MarkHubbard33 @juhasaarinen sorry that's just nutty
— Paul Foster-Bell MP (@PARFosterBell) August 20, 2013
@PARFosterBell How is mass surveillance part of our classical liberal birthright?
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
@PARFosterBell How does party believing in small state force such sweeping powers of state, that r routinely violated by NSA & past GCSB?
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
@PARFosterBell Once we have become surveillance state, then what is left to protect anymore? Not our freedom, obviously. @juhasaarinen
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
@PARFosterBell what are the real threats? Once we become surveillance what are we protecting any longer. Tell you what ...
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
@PARFosterBell ... I'll take risk of foreign terrorism, if you leave me a free man. This is the West, that's acceptable risk.
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
@PARFosterBell What complete abrogation of security? And what about philosophy of free West? I will accept risks of freedom, don't nanny me.
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
@juhasaarinen my social media is for my friends and supporters. Not interested in engaging with rabid nutters, or the abusive messages...
— Paul Foster-Bell MP (@PARFosterBell) August 20, 2013
@PARFosterBell U blocked me because u couldn't answer basic questions on free society? & while u would give me no right 2 block GCSB #Coward
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
@PARFosterBell If social media 4 your friends, y did u interact? U disengaged when u couldn't justify your vote tomorrow. @juhasaarinen
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
#Gcsb new rules bit like a speed camera. U aint goin fast - all good. You speed - you get nabbed. If u speed u cud hurt someone. Simple.
— bustedblonde (@bustedblonde) August 20, 2013
@bustedblonde Oh come on Busted: not you with that trite nothing to hide nothing to worry about. I thought you were 4 small state? Free life
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
@MarkHubbard33 met too many mad and really bad bastards to know we are never safe from tyranny and terrorists .
— bustedblonde (@bustedblonde) August 20, 2013
@bustedblonde Those who trade freedom for safety, will end up with neither. The Free West is lost.
— Mark Hubbard (@MarkHubbard33) August 20, 2013
Load of bollocks"@MarkHubbard33: @bustedblonde Those who trade freedom for safety, will end up with neither. The Free West is lost."
— bustedblonde (@bustedblonde) August 20, 2013
@bustedblonde Not bollocks, Benjamin Franklin. Truly, u show how utterly free West is lost.

The Closure of US Legal Site, Groklaw.
Groklaw shuts over fears of NSA email snooping http://t.co/tudOJa9LXm
— Guardian Tech (@guardiantech) August 20, 2013
The owner of Lavabit tells us that he's stopped using email and if we knew what he knew, we'd stop too. There is no way to do Groklaw without email. Therein lies the conundrum. What to do?
What to do? I've spent the last couple of weeks trying to figure it out. And the conclusion I've reached is that there is no way to continue doing Groklaw, not long term, which is incredibly sad. But it's good to be realistic. And the simple truth is, no matter how good the motives might be for collecting and screening everything we say to one another, and no matter how "clean" we all are ourselves from the standpoint of the screeners, I don't know how to function in such an atmosphere. I don't know how to do Groklaw like this.(Snip)My personal decision is to get off of the Internet to the degree it's possible. I'm just an ordinary person. But I really know, after all my research and some serious thinking things through, that I can't stay online personally without losing my humanness, now that I know that ensuring privacy online is impossible. I find myself unable to write. I've always been a private person. That's why I never wanted to be a celebrity and why I fought hard to maintain both my privacy and yours.
Oddly, if everyone did that, leap off the Internet, the world's economy would collapse, I suppose. I can't really hope for that. But for me, the Internet is over.
So this is the last Groklaw article. I won't turn on comments. Thank you for all you've done. I will never forget you and our work together. I hope you'll remember me too. I'm sorry I can't overcome these feelings, but I yam what I yam, and I tried, but I can't.
Hi Mark
ReplyDeleteYour frustration is understandable. There is little point in your signing off for good because your fingerprints are all over the place. Just like mine. We both needed to make that choice 1994 or was that 1984?
Stay on line and make *them* reach for the off switch. ;-)

ReplyDeleteAgree. Our trouble is, topple him and we're stuck with the big taxing statists.
